That Hideous Strength: A Deeper Look at How the West Was Lost {book review}

When C.R. Wiley was asked recently to summarize his new book, In the House of Tom Bombadil, he said, “No. The book is the summary.” I feel that way about That Hideous Strength: A Deeper Look at How the West Was LostIt’s difficult to describe without just sharing half the book because it is, in a very real sense, a summary.

The bulk of the book describes the cultural Marxism that characterizes our current culture, as well as the history of its development.  If you’ve been paying discerning attention in recent decades, there may not be anything altogether new in this for you — but you’ll find useful summarizing quotes and evidence to use in conversation with others.  If you think the claims of cultural Marxism are over-reaction and/or conspiracy theories, you’ll likely find this eye-opening.

(Side note: there’s an earlier edition of the book.  I haven’t looked at it, but I’m told there’s enough new material that it’s worth just getting the expanded version.  I think the older edition also isn’t referenced well.)

The last section of the book is the “okay, now what do we do about it?’ — and it fits in beautifully with the vision here at The Dominion Project.

This is a fairly quickly read, and I highly, highly recommend it for everyone.  If you think you don’t need it because you already know there’s a cultural problem, you’ll want it as a tool for communicating that others.  If you think you don’t need it because you don’t think there is a cultural problem, then you need it like nearsighted people need glasses.
